The Hospital: Day Nine

Tuesday, July 6

Ariana does not eat breakfast. She is kept tied down to the bed the whole day.

Aglia is released today, and we got a new patient for bed no.98. This new patient is an older man from Pavas; I will call him Don Pavas because I did not get his real name. He was not talking at all the first few days; he was diabetic and very ill. He had his sweater, his blanket, and his phone.

Later in the day, we got a new patient for bed no.100, Lupe. She was so ill her face was grey. She knew a little English, and we introduced ourselves. She is about 55 and has a large family she talks to on her phone. We were both very concerned about Ariana. We tried to speak with Ariana to get her to eat during the day. The male attendants and nurses also tried to get her to eat and drink.

9:00 p.m.: Repeat of the night before. The chime of monitor no.100 counts down after we are given our medicine. Lupe was not totally asleep yet and looked up at it and complained about it. Then no.98 and no.99 begin the clicks and beep as everyone is asleep (except me, I try sleeping most of the day to stay up at night). Ariana starts twisting and crying again. Her arms are tied down to the bed. Her cannula slipped off her face. Don Pavas and Evan grunt and moan in tandem with their monitors. Evan says things like ¨yes¨ and ¨nice¨ in a way that leaves me no doubt about the sexual nature of what is happening. This night the nurses and male attendants come in after each cycle. I tied knots to mark off the eight cycles before I fell asleep. I pretend to be asleep when the nurses come in. They change Ariana’s adult diaper and clean her bed. They take her temperature and blood pressure each time.
