The Hospital: Day Ten

Wednesday, July 7

Ariana’s condition is deteriorating. She looks gravely pale and is not eating or responding. I discuss with Lupe and Evan what is happening with Ariana, and they say they have noticed the same things. I try to explain what I see happening at night. We are concerned about Ariana being tied to the bed.

The day is dull; I sleep most of the day. Sleep, bed cleaning, oxygen mask therapy, blood pressure and temperature readings, Heparina shots, and meals take up some monotony. I practice leg stretches and review my memory knots.

Bela, the oxygen mask therapist, is thrilled with my progress. This therapy works to expand lung capacity. I told Bela that some strange things are happening in the hospital. She states very clearly to me not to look too deeply into things. Only focus on getting well and getting out. She says this several times. I feel she is trying to send me a message covertly.

Observations: The view out the window is very still. Almost like it is a painting. The way the windows are situated makes it very difficult to know what time it is. Sometimes I can see a small plane fly across the far sky or a flock of parrots flap past the windows. In the distance, I see the top of two towers from my bed.

Sounds: Construction sounds are coming from below our floor. It sounds like they are building more rooms or expanding the building somehow. At night there are the sounds of laughter from staff, like they are having a party nearby.

On this day, I noticed that the patient monitors became active earlier in the evening, even before we were given our medication. My impression is that the monitors, or whoever or whatever operates the monitors, are having too much fun abusing Ariana and are getting greedy. I also noticed that the nurses and the attendants are more tired and less happy.

I explained to Daniel in our last call the difference between what happens during the day and at night. In the daytime, there is a semblance of professionalism (well, the evil twins keep grabbing up my water on my tray or trying to take my memory knots from my wrist). At night there is a switch in staff; they are younger and less professional. I feel as if all of the adults have left the building.

The TV is on only for a few hours in the evening, and everyone is now watching the soccer game: https://copaamerica.com/en/. It is a huge event. I find it strange that I am in a COVID-19 hospital room, and everyone is watching soccer games. The soccer game occupies the early evenings for the rest of my time in Salon Tara.

9:00 p.m.: Repeat of the night before. On this night, I begin to get angry. It is sickening to witness someone being abused each night. Halfway through the night, I decide to ¨glitch¨ and participate in a sequence of the program. I begin looking at the next one, Texas Steakhouse Massacre, but decide to skip it, and I fall all the way to sleep. I wake up bathed in sweat. Even after taking the Florodon, I notice I can control my participation and awake times now at will.
